Głogów is a town of numerous monuments and mass events, most of which are little - popularized among Polish and foreign tourists. After the Thirty Year War, at the turn of the 17th and 18th centuries, the town experienced its economic boom.
The Second World War had a tremendous impact on the town’s image - Głogów was destroyed in 90%. Głogów’s inhabitants have been joining forces to restore historic parts of the town to life. They have been taking actions of tourist, educational and cultural values which will revive the historic places and attract the public from Poland and abroad.
The project will be realized in Głogów - a town with a convenient communications system (Głogów is an important road and rail hub in the North - Western part of the Dolnośląskie Voivodship; the distance of 100 - 130 km to German and the Czech borders as well as to Wrocław and Poznań; a modernized cultural infrastructure; an intense tourist movement, although an annual decrease is noticeable (in comparison with 1998, there were about 2000 hotel guests less and at the same time there was an increase of 10% in foreign tourists in Głogów in 2004 - the occurrence breeds anxiety about further development of tourism in Głogów and its surroundings, moreover, it makes the town intensify promotional activity).
The main aim of the project is stimulation of socio - economic development of Głogów based on cyclic and new cultural events (local products), monuments of culture and an existing cultural-recreational and gastronomic-hotel base.
Realization of the project will let Głogów promote its historic and tourist values, create the good basis for development of top grade (cultural) tourism, motivate the local community (local government, community centres, school and other institutions). Furthermore, the project will raise Głogów’s prestige and attractiveness and will simultaneously decrease diversification in quality of life among Głogów’s and neighbouring districts’ dwellers. The project has an extensive character and concerns widely understood promotion of local products throughout the country and abroad through organizing 3 cultural events - special stimuli of cultural life.
The promotional undertakings will also stimulate local business, especially services, which will do local labour market good (at present, there is high local unemployment (24%) and decrease in employment in Głogów industry).
